In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
